Experimental Optical Polarizer for Underwater Use.

Abstract

Although polarization techniques can be used to improve underwater visibility, commercially available absorption polarizers are only 21 to 37 percent efficient in converting unpolarized light to circularly polarized light. A free-flooded experimental polarizer that is approximately 57 percent efficient has been designed and tested. By changing to a non-flooded design, it should be possible to build future polarizers which are approximately 90 percent efficient. (Author)
