Movement of TRW House Module.
Abstract
In March 1971 TRW Corporation trucked a house module 7.1 miles over paved highways to an erection site in Redondo Beach, California. In cooperation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), NCEL observed transportation of the module, bump course tests, and placement of the module on its foundation. The house module is 32 feet long, 21 feet wide and weighs 21,000 pounds. Transportation did no damage to the house module. Bump course tests produced accelerations of 2g at truck speeds of 5 mph. Lowering the module onto its foundation produced three hairline cracks in interior partitions but no damage to the exterior shell. It is recommended that a standard bump course test be specified for HUD contractors who plan to transport modules to erection sites. (Author)
