Development of Procedures to Evaluate Hot Section Deterioration for Marine Gas Turbines.

Abstract

Studies were conducted on hot section deterioration of first stage turbine nozzles and rotating blades from two FT4A-2 gas turbine engines. The first test engine operated for approximately 2600 hours on Navy Diesel Fuel while the second test engine accumulated approximately 1000 hours of operating time on Standard Distillate Fuel with vanadium additions. The examined first stage components included two different vane alloys and three different blade alloys. In addition, each component had been given one of three different protective coatings. Several procedures were proposed for evaluating the performance of the first stage components. These included descriptive interpretations, coating thickness low measurements, performance parameter measurements and microprobe analysis. In addition, a method of in-place evaluation of hot stage components was illustrated. The inherent limitations of each procedure were discussed. It was demonstrated that reliable comparisons between hot stage component performance of different engiens can best be obtained by utilization of multiple evaluation methods.
