Self-Contained Sanitation Systems for 2- to 15-Man Polar Facilities.

Commercially available self-contained sanitation systems are compared with the NCEL Mechanical-Flush Chemical Toilet for use at Navy camps in polar regions. The basic process alternatives compared with the NCEL unit in a cost-effectiveness analysis are conventional chemical toilets, recirculating chemical toilets, incinerating toilets, and minimum-water flush toilet, Model 600 manufactured by Thetford Engineering Corp., Anaheim, California, was found to be the most cost-effective system suitable for use at 2- to 15-man polar pioneer camps.
