Type III, Low Pressure, Folding Sidewall (Expandable) Aircraft Tire Flight Demonstration Program.

Abstract

A complete system and hardware package enables the Air Force to make flight test evaluations of Type 3 expandable tires, utilizing a C-131B aircraft as the test bed vehicle. All equipment was installed aboard the aircraft and functionally tested prior to flight. The flight test program for this system and for the tires is considered satisfactory. The system provides for inflation and deflation of the tires in coordination with raising and lowering the aircraft main landing gear (MLG). Monitoring of pertinent system and aircraft parameters is also provided for control and for evaluation studies by the Air Force. The system includes air compressing and storage equipment, valves, switches, timers, and orifices which enable full inflation (70 psi) of the tires during the ten second extension time of the MLG. Additional similar components enable complete collapse of the tire sidewalls during a seven second retarded retraction cycle which insures that partially inflated tires do not enter the nacelle.
