A General Solution for One-Dimensional Nonsteady Flow of a Perfect Gas,

Abstract

As part of a theoretical investigation designed to increase the understanding of the flow of gases such as that which occurs behind a missile in a gun barrel, an analysis of the nonsteady aspect of the flow was initiated. A new general solution for one-dimensional nonsteady flow of a perfect gas is given involving integrals instead of differential quotients used exclusively heretofore. It is applied to two initial value problems. The formulas thus obtained are more convenient than those employed before in determining any particular solution.
