Mechanism of Functioning of Electric Primers,
Abstract
The electrical characteristics of the T59E3 electric primer have been studied and efforts made to correlate these characteristics with the functioning. The resistance of primers before and during firing has been measured in various ways and curves showing the variation of current and voltage with time during firing with condensers of various capacities at various voltages have been obtained. Similar information has been obtained for Remington M52A1 primers. A possible mechanism of functioning has been tentatively suggested, and the experimental evidence is discussed in the light of it. The theory, at the moment, is little more than qualitative in nature but it does suggest what changes in the mixture may lead to shorter primer times. It does also account for the observed differences between T59E3 and M52A1 primers as well as their behavior under various firing conditions. (Author)
