Weather Forecasting of Free Balloon Flights in Cosmic Ray Research.

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to present a foundation of knowledge, experience, and methods for a meteorologist interested in the particular weather problems encountered in the cosmic ray project. The first part of this report attempts to explain the problems confronting the forecaster, the past procedures used in forecasting, and the sources and availability of weather information. The second section deals primarily with statistical data summarized to indicate what conditions might be expected on a climatological basis. Lastly, there is included a discussion and analysis of an actual instrumented cosmic ray balloon flight.
