The Operational Value of Simple Mining Material,

Abstract

There is and will always be considerable scope for the employment of the simpler types of mining material as such and stock-pile mines should not be scrapped on the introduction of the more complex types. Enemy mine sweeping could be complicated by the use of simple mines which incorporate ship counts with the addition of intermittent arming and delayed arming. Additional complication may be provided by including a fixed intercount dead period and by an arrangement whereby a mine arms fully if it does not observe any ship activity within a fixed period of say one week. The utility of a Special Devices Unit that would design special types of mine assemblies that would take care of specific operational requirements is also described. (Author)
