Mission Analysis on Command and Control Communications for Theater Air Operations. A Study of the Practicality of Modifying AN/APX-72 Transponders for Data Link.
Abstract
This report summarizes the study efforts of the Bendix Communications Division to determine the feasibility and practicality of modifying existing AN/APX-72 transponders for data link capability. Various system options are presented as a function of the degree of modification of the AN/APX-72, and they are discussed as to their modes of operation: normal IFF and Time Division Multiple Access. The signal structures and coding scheme to be utilized are developed and analyzed for their constraints on the system design. For each of the system options presented, block and logic diagrams are included to depict the hardware required to mechanize the system. Where modifications to the AN/APX-72 are required, they are identified and described. The projected size, weight, and power of the proposed encoder/decoder are indicated. Budgetary cost estimates are included for: the development of the encoder/decoder, modifications to the APX-72, and aircraft installation costs. Finally, a time schedule summarizes the activities of the ensuing AN/APX-72 Data Link program. (Author)
