Mission Analysis on Command and Control Communications for Theater Air Operations. Air Force Interservice Interface Study. Volume 1

Abstract

Tactical Air Force (TAF) communications interfaces with joint services within a theater of operations were identified, defined, and classified to determine any problem areas that will prevent or interfere with the interoperability required between the elements of the TAF and the other services. The interfaces defined are for the Air Force component of; a Joint Force which includes a two-corps Field Army, and a Joint Amphibious Task Force which includes a Marine Amphibious Force. In addition to categorizing the present-day (1971-1972) interfaces, the near term/future interfaces (1973-1985) were identified for those systems which have been defined in sufficient detail. The points of interface considered included those with the Joint Services; US Army, US Navy, and US Marine Corps elements; the Joint Forces Headquarters complex; the ICAO within the host country; and with DCA and NSA systems in the field. The interfaces are categorized by system affiliation, link terminal equipments, and end instruments. The interconnections are further classified according to message function, use, type or mode of traffic, format or structure, operational characteristics, and the estimated traffic quantity for the 1975 time period. Tables of the technical parameters and characteristics of the interfacing equipments are included, with charts indicating the relative compatibility of like equipments. The results of the study are presented in two volumes; the second, which is classified, presents interoperability problems associated with cryptosecurity equipments.
