Mission Analysis on Command and Control Communications for Theater Air Operations. Final Report on Switch Systems Study. Volume I.

Abstract

This report summarizes the work of the Switch Systems Study. Traffic, service, and performance requirements assumed for the circuit and message switches studied are presented. Four types of circuit switch and one message switch are studied. The circuit switch types are: TDM Digital; Space Division Digital; Hybrid, TDM Digital/Space Division Analog; Hybrid, Space Division Digital/Space Division Analog. All circuit switches must serve both analog and digital subscribers. Switch descriptions and cost estimates are presented for circuit switch sizes from 300 to 2400 lines and message switch sizes from 50 to 150 lines. Data are presented showing cost per line as a function of percentage of digital lines and as a function of switch size, with percentage of subscribers having secure service a parameter. Also presented are the results of a study of alternative ways of providing switched service to users on a large tactical airbase. The alternatives considered are a single large circuit switch and several smaller circuit switches dispersed among communities of subscribers. (Author)
