Abstract
This paper describes the origin and development of rates of advance used in ATLAS and several other theater warfare simulators, examines the results of some efforts to extract useful rate-of-advance information from history, reviews major factors affecting rates of advance, considers the feasibility of using war games and simulations themselves to derive rates of advance, and presents findings and conclusions.
