Progress Report Abstracts. Microbiology Program.

Abstract

Under the general topic of microbiology, the Office of Naval Research sponsors basic research in medical microbiology and aerobiology. In the area of medical microbiology, it is important to develop new methods for the prevention, control and treatment of diseases of importance to the Navy and the Marine Corps. Before it is possible to develop these new methods, it is necessary to improve the fundamental research knowledge of the mechanism by which microorganisms produce disease in the host. A portion of research described in this report is designed to provide basic information needed to assist in attainment of the solutions of infectious diseases in the Navy and Marine Corps. Another portion of the research in this report is designed to provide information relative to the effects of physical, chemical and biological factors on the disease producing microorganisms in the aerosolized state. In these projects, the effects of the atmosphere or environment on the production, stability, movement and decay of aerosolized microorganisms is studied in order to prevent disease transmission among large numbers of men in confined spaces such as on board Navy vessels and in barracks. Most of this expertise and research is limited to the staff of the Naval Biomedical Research Laboratory, Oakland, California.
