UpSTAGE Experiment. UpSTAGE Technology Report: Vibration Analysis and Testing,

Abstract

This document presents the design philosophy and test criteria for vibration and shock which were applied to the UpSTAGE Experiment vehicles. It describes the analyses performed to define the random, sinusoidal, and shock environments; describes the vibration, shock, and acoustic tests performed on the vehicles; and discusses the vibration flight data from three vehicles with external burning control systems. The random vibration predictions made in the analyses represent the first application of the statistical energy analysis (SEA) approach to a complex system. These predictions agreed with the vibration levels measured during flights of the external burning vehicles. The vehicles were small enough to permit total system tests to be conducted to define the polarity of both the control accelerometers and the laser triad rate gyro, along with total system acceptance tests and modal surveys.
