Environmental Stability of Coated Fabric Heat Seals.
Abstract
Seam strengths of heat-sealed, thermoplastic-coated fabrics were compared with those of a sewn control after exposure to both natural and accelerated environmental aging. Heat- sealed seams on polyethylene/vinyl acetate shear directional strength when compared with seams on a sewn control at temperatures from minus 65 degrees F to plus 125 degrees F. Heat-sealed seams on vinyl-coated fabrics showed no seam strength deterioration after exposure of one year at Panama, whereas the sewn seams lost over 20% of its strength. Both sewn and heat-sealed seams lost significant strength after contact with militaty grade oils or insect repellent. (Author) (Author-PL)
