Manufacturing Methods for Rolling Very High Strength Superalloy Sheet.

Abstract

The objective of this program was to develop a manufacturing process for the production of quality Unitemp AF- 2-1DA sheet. Secondary aims were to determine the most economical processing method, and to produce enough sheet at various sizes to develop reliable mechanical property data. The program was conducted in two phases. Phase I, Process Evaluation, included hot workability, mechanical properties, and the economics of sheet rolled from starting stock obtained by three methods; (1) Double vacuum melting and press forging; (2) Double vacuum melting and extrusion; and (3) Direct rolling of electroslag refined ingots. Plate and sheet material was produced and evaluated. Hot rolling temperatures, reductions, canning, annealing, and cold rolling methods were studied. Results indicated that press forging a double vacuum melted ingot was the best method of obtaining starting stock for sheet rolling. A furnace temperature of 2000/2050 F with moderate hot reductions of eight to ten percent and surface protections represented the best sheet rolling practice. Phase II, Process Verification, a scale-up to commercial size sheets, employed practices established in Phase I and resulted in the successful production of large sheets at 0.040 inch, 0.030 inch, and 0.015 inch in 36 inch widths and finished lengths up to 72 inches.
