SST Technology Follow-On Program, Phase I. Aluminum Brazed Titanium Sandwich Allowables.

Abstract

Mechanical property allowables for aluminum-brazed titanium sandwich are presented for room temperature, 450 F, and 550 F. This titanium sandwich, developed for use on the supersonic transport prototype, consisted of 6Al-4V titanium alloy face sheets, 3Al-2.5V titanium core, and 3003 aluminum braze alloy. The design allowables investigated were flatwise tension strength, core properties including core compression and core shear, compression local instabilities including intracell buckling and face sheet wrinkling, compression general instability, and inplane shear local instability.
