Development and Demonstration of a Flightweight Hydroquench Thrust Termination System (HTTS).

Abstract

This report describes effort to design and develop an internally mounted Hydroquench Thrust Termination System (HTTS) capable of extinguishing the Stage III Minuteman III motor at any time between 40 and 90 percent impulse expended. Criteria for quenching are defined, and the design process is detailed. The single pulse HTTS included an integral igniter able to ignite the motor at any time, a unique gas generator, and post-coolant sprays to maintain permanent shutdown. Laboratory bench tests which confirmed design of critical components are discussed, and performance predictions presented. Two thin-web motors simulating Minuteman at 90 percent of burnout were designed and delivered to AFRPL. Design and performance features are described, including the nozzle capable of multipulse firing without refurbishment. (Author)
