Development of a High Speed 1.06 Micron Photomultiplier Tube.

Abstract

An electrostatically focused photomultiplier was made using a III-V photocathode and a silicon avalanche diode for electron multiplier. III-V photocathodes were GaAs and GaInAs on either GaP or GaAs as a substrate. Detailed descriptions of cleaning and assembly procedures, as well as exhaust and activation procedures are included. Basic tube construction problems and avalanche diode performance problems were solved. The feasibility of this approach was proven, even though III-V transmission photocathodes did not give the sensitivity projected. (Author)
