Synthesis of Soil Hugoniots Between 1 and 100 Kilobars.

Abstract

An analytic derivation for a constitutive relation governing the response of soil to shock loading is presented. The development is based on the contemporary theory of mixtures with soil envisioned as a two-constituent (solid/water) mixture. Jump equations for each constituent are derived. Energy transfer between constituents within the shock surface is allowed. Synthesized Hygoniots are established for a wide range of initial soil configurations, and comparison with published experimental data is presented. (Author)
