Holographic Inspection and Evaluation of Propulsion Materials.

Abstract

The study of the residual stress behavior of pyrolytic graphite coated composites is reported. Both experimental and analytical studies were conducted. Means for reducing the high residual stresses were also studied. Thermal stress behavior of silicon carbide codeposited pyrolytic graphite composites is also reported. Both temperature and radial expansion measurements were made during heating in the electron beam thermal stress experiment. Significant progress was made in the NDT of pyrolytic graphite coated rocket nozzle inserts. Different types of flaws could be readily located using various loading techniques. The detection of flaws in adhesive-bonded reinforced plastics was not as easy as with the more rigid graphitic materials. (Author, modified-PL)
