Sensitometry of Hughes Nucleation Media.

Abstract

This report describes the development of methods and instrumental means for determining the critical characteristics of a novel electron beam recording material and establishing an evaluation capability. The recording material is a nucleation type media produced by Hughes Research Laboratories. It produces an image by deposition of zinc from vapor and this image is viewed in reflection. The effort was directed toward providing quantitative and qualitative results which can be compared to performance characteristics of other recording media, to utilize a controlled electron beam as the primary signal input and zinc vapor as the processing technique and to simulate certain conditions that are expected to occur in reconnaissance uses. A number of factors unique to sensitometry of this class of materials are described and the results of efforts to develop sensitometric equipments and techniques for evaluating this media are reviewed in detail. Sensitometric results are presented for a variety of processing and technique variables. (Author)
