Flight Demonstrations of Vega Command/Data System for Target Drone Applications.
Abstract
Thirteen flight demonstrations were conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing Vega Precision Laboratories, Inc. command and data systems for BMQ-34A command and control, and to show applicability of the Vega Model 626C Portable Radar Tracking System in drone control applications. The following flight test objectives were successfully accomplished: (1) Demonstrated the capability of the Vega command and data systems to interface with MSQ-1A radar at Tyndall AFB and with FPS-16 radar at Eglin Stie D-3 (without modification to the radars) for command control of and data transmission from a BQM-34A target drone. (2) Demonstrated the capability of the Vega system (airborne portion) to interface with the present BQM-34A miss distance scorer to provide air/ground data transmissions of the scoring system calibration and miss distance scoring information. (3) Demonstrated the capability of the Vega Model 626C Portable Radar Tracking System (modified) to track, control, and receive data from the BQM-34A target drone out to a distance of 100 miles from the radar site. (4) Demonstrated the capability of the Vega Model 626C Portable Radar Tracking System, installed on a target recovery boat, to track, command, and receive data from a BQM-34A target drone. (5) Demonstrated the capability of hand-off of target control between the Vega portable radar tracking system and the MSQ-1A control station. (6) Demonstrated the ability of the Vega interrogation loss module to initiate the automatic recovery sequence upon loss of radar interrogation signals. (Author)
