New and Improved Rubber Compounds for Weapon Systems.

Abstract

A study of the compatibility of elastomers with MIL-L-46000 lubricant, MIL-C-372 bore cleaner and various explosives and propellants is reported. A technique for bonding neoprene rubber to steel during injection molding is described. Newly marketed carbon blacks were shown to be suitable replacements for channel blacks that are no longer manufactured in this country. Channel blacks are cited in many military tire specifications as ingredients for control or referee compounds. Newly developed fluorosilicone rubber inserts significantly increased the service life of the M16A1 rifle extractor springs. Other potential applications of fluorosilicone elastomers for improving weapon systems are described. (Author, modified-PL)
