A Study of Ultrasonic Techniques for the Inspection of Liberty Ship Welds.

Abstract

A study was made of ultrasonic techniques for the inspection of Liberty Ship butt welds. Although radiography revealed gross defects in the welds ultrasonic inspection did not detect most of the defects and did not indicate the proper degree of severity for those defects detected. Extensive corrosion pitting on the outside of the hull was determined to be the problem. (Author)
