Power Source for Use in Long Delay, Impact and Proximity Bomb Fuzes.
Abstract
The objective of the work conducted under this contract was to determine the feasibility of making a high rate-low temperature mercuric oxide-cadmium battery that would meet the requirements for a power source to be used in both the long delay, impact and proximity bomb fuzes. Work was directed toward improvement of the low temperature (-65 F), high rate pulsing capability of the mercuric oxide-cadmium system. The contribution of each cell component to cell polarization at -65 F in the 600HC cell size was examined. The major portion of the polarization was activation polarization of the electrodes with the cathode contributing 40 percent more than the anode. Efforts to improve the electrodes furthered the state-of-the-art but did not meet the final high rate pulsing objective. A 300 MAH cell size, called the 300HC, was developed to meet the battery requirements. Problems were encountered with electrode thickness in the 300HC yielding poor low temperature pulsing capability. However, the final 300HC design had over a 100 percent increase in rate capability at -65 F when compared with the best precontract -65 F 600HC cell design. (Author)
