Development of Package Decontaminating System.

Abstract

The object of this research effort was to develop an improved multiagent decontaminant and/or decontaminants, with respect to DS2. Three approaches were investigated: (1) a study of chelating and/or clathrating agents, (2) studies to decrease toxicity and fuming by reduction of the amine through substitution of solvating agents, (3) studies of azeotropic solutions. The gas-liquid chromatograph and the DB-3 tube technique were utilized for analytical purposes. The glc was further optimized during this contract. The presence of <<1% HD was determined routinely by the glc. The DB-3 tube technique is now considered as a questionable adjunct to the glc. Five candidate formulations were selected for final evaluation at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. They were chosen on the basis of equal or improved performance to DS2 in one or more of the areas tested. The major criterion was a minimum of 99% destruction of HD within one minute at ambient temperature. (Author)
