A CNI Systems Prerequisites/Capabilities for Instrument Landing.
Abstract
The objective of this study program was to determine the characteristics of an instrument landing system using multilateration techniques and compatible with the wideband signal format proposed for the Air Force CNI system. It was to provide for an orderly progression of capability to higher categories of landing system guidance through modular extensions of the basic design. Criteria were selected to provide an operational specification of the landing categories. Based on these criteria, it was seen that the basic multilateration alone is sufficient for only nonprecision approaches. With the addition of supplemental beacons along the approach path in advance of the runway the proposed Category I requirements can be achieved. It should be noted that these are equal to the present requirements for Category II landings. In order to achieve higher category landings, additional aids must be employed. The use of inertial platforms, radar altimeters, and microwave glide slopes are discussed for this purpose. The effects of multipath propagation were analyzed and geometrical areas of threat determined. It was seen that the wide bandwidth of the ranging signal provides significant rejection of multipath signals.
