Low-Cycle Fatigue Behavior of 5086-H116 and 5456-H117 Aluminum Alloys.

Abstract

Low-cycle flexural fatigue tests, in air and in salt-water environments, were conducted in 1-inch-thick baseplate specimens made of 5086-H116 and 5456-H117 aluminum alloys. The results indicate that the fatigue resistance of both alloys is similar despite strength differences; and that, under the conditions of the test, low-cycle fatigue life is unaffected by the presence of salt water. The baseplate fatigue data will serve as a base line for use in evaluating the fatigue behavior of butt- and tee-weldments fabricated from the same alloys. (Author)
