Some Aspects of Magnetism, Solid State Physics and Technology in Japan.

Abstract

During a month's visit to Japan (April 1972), the author had occasion to sample the quality of its magnetism and solid state work at some of the industrial research laboratories, at various universities and by direct contact with scientists at two major magnetism meetings: 'The International Conference on Magnetism (Intermag 1972)' and 'The Fifth International Colloquium on Magnetic Thin Films.' In the process, some feeling was attained as to the general state of technology in Japan. It is widely agreed that a great economic crisis is occuring in Japan demanding new directions for industry and having important impact on the country's technology and research. The devaluation of the American dollar is just one sign of this crisis. It is worthwhile and useful to watch how the Japanese solve this problem since Japan has a history of resolving its major economic, industrial and cultural crises without too drastic internal upheavals.
