The Impact of Ecological Considerations on Ordnance Disposal.

Abstract

Department of the Navy directives require that all new initiatives fully consider relevant pollution aspects ranging from production to disposal. Consequently, the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Facility was required to evaluate preliminary development plans for a new Navy 5-inch projectile designed to minimize hazards involved in ammunition disposal and its harm to the environment. This evaluation verified that the encapsulated explosive could easily be separated from the projectile body and, depending on its type, reclaimed or recycled by standard processes. It was also apparent that automated disassembly of the projectile can be readily accomplished on a production basis. (Author)
