Historical Documentation of the Infantry Helmet Research and Development
Abstract
This report documents the history of U.S. infantry helmets. Major topics are presented in separate sections: Ballistic Protection, Materials Technology, Suspension and Retention, Acoustic Characteristics, Eye Protection and Visual Field, Anthropometrics and Mathematical Models of the Head, Wound Ballistics, and Funding. Discussion of helmet design includes one-piece versus two-piece (shell and liner), one size versus multiple sizes, pad versus multiple-web suspension, and area coverage. The current evaluation procedure, Casualty Reduction Analysis, is also discussed. The report concludes that the helmet program contained in the USAMC Five-Year Personnel Armor System Technical Plan adequately addresses the major problem areas established by this documentation. It concludes further that the systems approach is appropriate for problems of incompatibility and for optimizing the total ballistic protection for the combat soldier.
