Limited Scan Phased Array Antenna Experimental Model (AGILTRAC).

Abstract

An experimental model of a C-Band Limited Scan Phased Array Antenna for the AN/FPS-16 type range instrumentation radar was successfully designed, developed, fabricated, tested and evaluated using passive, fixed phase shifter array elements for beam steering. Electronic scanning capability was demonstrated over a scan area in excess of + or - 5 deg with respect to the antenna boresight axis thereby meeting the key objective of the program. The incorporation of this Limited Scan Antenna with electronically controllable array elements and associated beam steering controls into an instrumentation radar will provide new and improved system capabilities, including (1) multiple target tracking (2) search-while-track (3) range surveillance and traffic control (4) decreased acquisition time and (5) improved dynamic performance on accelerating targets. A description of the antenna, discussions of design considerations, extensive test results, and an evaluation of antenna performance are presented in this report. (Author)
