Low Cost Ramjet.

Abstract

This program was addressed to developing a ramjet engine which could be used for propulsion in the subsonic and low supersonic flight regions that can be produced at low cost when compared to other state-of-the-art propulsion devices. A full size, 15 in. diameter pitot inlet ramjet was designed, fabricated and ground tested with the envelope from Mach .7 to .9, sea level to 20,000 ft and at Mach 2.0. The engine was converted to a supersonic engine by replacing the pitot inlet with a 50 deg conical inlet with a Mach 2.0 design. All testing was conducted free jet, using a thrust stand. Final results of the experimental program, using both performance calculated from internal pressure data and direct thrust readings, indicate that the engine performed as predicted in the regions of interest. Control system analyses have defined fuel controls compatible with trajectories of interest and in line with low cost objectives.
