Sound Ranging Radio Data Link System AN/GRA-114 (XE-1, XE-2). Volume 1.

Abstract

This report describes design, development and testing of the AN/GRA-114 (XE-1) and AN/GRA-114 (XE-2) Radio Data Link Systems for Sound Ranging. Activities are presented in a chronological sequence which traces the program progress through the modification of existing U.S. Army equipment for the XE-1 system to the newly designed and developed equipment which comprises the XE-2 system. The results of the field testing performed on both systems substantiate the feasibility of the sound ranging concept to locate the position of active artillery. The conclusions presented describe, in detail, the success and the shortcomings of the system as it exists now. Recommendations are presented which, when implemented, will rectify the shortcomings noted and provide the customer with a fully effective, accurate and reliable sound ranging data link. (Author)
