Wide Angle Laser Beam Steering.

Abstract

A systematic investigation has been conducted on the wide angle deflection of laser beams by magnetic stripe domains in a magnetic platelet. Techniques for preparing crystals of YIG by liquid phase epitaxy and MnBiSb by evaporation are described. The YIG crystals exhibited stripe domains. An argon laser beam was deflected by stripe domains in a YIG crystal 20 deg in two dimensions from a 10 deg residual. The equivalent deflection at 1.06 micrometer wavelength is 50 deg from a 20 deg residual. The beam divergence was less than .85 milliradian. The optical efficiency of the device is limited by absorption losses in the deflector crystal and the efficiency diminishes at the extremes of deflection. The deflector was operated dynamically at 40 kHz.
