Concept of Conducting Task Component Exercises While in Port.

Abstract

This report describes a concept of conducting ASW Task Group exercises while in port. The objective of the study is to evaluate the operational feasibility of the concept and to determine its technical and cost implications. The concept envisages the conduct of simulated underway exercises aboard own ship/aircraft while in own home port utilizing a communication system and a central computer. The concept would permit free play with participants manning their regular stations aboard their own units and making maximum utilization of on-board operational equipment. The system developed from the concept was divided into subsystems for in-depth analysis purposes. These were computers and software, interfaces with surface ships, aircraft and submarines, land line data and voice communications and a central computer facility. The concept was determined to be desirable from an operational standpoint and feasible from both a technical and a cost standpoint. It was concluded that a demonstration test of the system should be implemented. (Author)
