Mechanically Powered Hose Reel.

Abstract

The Hose Reel was designed, fabricated and successfully tested. Assembly drawings 215-1000 and 215-4019 are included with this report to show the configuration. The reel completed all qualification tests without damage or unexpected wear; and was reassembled with new spring motors and seals. The electrobrake was reassembled with new brake shoe material and the speed control governor modified for a closer speed control at approximately 12 FPS at 450 lbs. hose tension. It is recommended, however, that the governor be modified to limit hose speed to 8 FPS in trial before a flight test is conducted. The torque output of the spring motors was less than specified by the manufacturer. Reel drum torque varied from 3280 to 3640 pound-inches instead of 3800 to 4000. An additional weight penalty would be paid to increase torque, so it is recommended that the reel should be flight tested as is. The airspeed envelope will be within the capability of the KC-130 Aircraft, which will allow rewind at 120 to 150 KEAS. (Author)
