Analysis of Commercial and Military STOL Design Criteria.

Abstract

This report presents the results of an analytical study to reconcile military and commerical aircraft design requirements in areas which have a major impact of STOL design. Areas studied include takeoff performance criteria, landing performance criteria and noise level criteria. An analysis of military and commercial takeoff and landing performance criteria established the sensitivity of aircraft size and performance to variations in criteria and provided a recommended military criteria for the design of STOL aircraft. These recommended criteria were, in turn, compared with likely commercial STOL criteria. The recommended military STOL design criteria were utilized to define an Externally Blown Flap STOL transport design. Utilizing this airplane as a point of departure an analysis was also conducted to define the impact of engine cycle changes and acoustic treatment on aircraft noise and aircraft size. (Author)
