Pb-SnTe Single Crystals.

Abstract

This program was undertaken to produce large, homogeneous crystals of PbSnTe by a closed-tube vapor transport process. High purity starting elements were further purified by zone refining and were compounded to produce Pb sub 1-X Sn sub XTe, nominally 21% SnTe, which was used as the charge in the vapor transport. Conditions were found to produce crystal boules 25 mm in diameter and up to 25 mm long at rates as high as 4 g/day. Material of high crystalline perfection was identified by metallographic examination and by large-area Laue x-ray photographs. Electron microprobe analysis indicated that the point-to-point compositional variation would give less than + or - 0.5 micrometers spread in cut-off wavelength around an average of 11 micrometers cut-off.
