Survivability of Air Launched Guided Weapons in A Fire Environment

Abstract

Tests were conducted to establish fast cook-off characteristics of the following guided weapons: (1) SIDEWINDER (AIM-9), (2) WALLEYE (MARK 1 MOD 0) , (3) SPARROW III (AIM-7), and (4) SHRIKE (AGM-45A). The type of reaction that occurred, the time to reaction and time-temperature data were obtained for each guided weapon when engulfed in fire from burning JP-5 fuel. These data are applicable to the design of thermal protection systems and the development of safer fire fighting procedures.
