Product Improvement Test of Cartridge, 4.2-Inch, HE, M329A1E1 (Improved Lightweight Cartridge).

Abstract

A product improvement test was conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) to provide sufficient test data on cartridge, 4.2-inch, HE, M329A1E1 in order that a recommendation relative to item suitability for US Army use can be made and to compare the test M329A1E1 cartridge with the standard M329A1 cartridge. Infantry Board representatives performed the service test portions of the test and submitted a test report which is incorporated into this report. The test round satisfied test plan criteria for physical examination and inspection, charge establishment and velocity check, metal parts security, 40-foot drop, rapid fire, misfire removal, pressure-time-travel, blast overpressure and noise, aerial deliivery, adverse conditions, bullet sensitivity, maintenance evaluation, rate of fire, and durability and reliability. It satisfied criteria for safety test, sequential rough-handling, and cook-off in spite of discovered shortcomings because the M329A1 cartridge experiences the same conditions. It satisfied criteria of human-factors engineering in spite of shortcomings of the discarding obturator, which are considered as a potential hazard, and splinters from the plywood lids and bottoms of the ammunition boxes.
