Application of Schalkwijk Source Coding Techniques to Pictorial Sources.

Abstract

A variable-to-block-with-prefix scheme is developed on the basis of Schalkwijk's work. It allows large compression ratios when the local entropy of the data is low and does so at greatly reduced complexity. Computer programs are developed to implement the scheme for both encoder and decoder. A data transformation technique is selected for converting from M-ary to binary with maximum compression. The data consisted to Automatic Picture Transmission weather Photographs which had been converted to digital form and stored on magnetic tape. (Author)
