Tactical Facsimile Subsystem, an Alternative Approach.
Abstract
The objective of this contract was to design, build, deliver, and demonstrate a two-way system capable of simultaneous voice and graphics transmission through standard voice bandwidth Air Force transceivers. INTERAND technology in this area is basically oriented toward the handling of graphics generated in the manner of handwriting--that is to say, a time-related sequence of X-Y coordinates corresponding to the shape of a given symbol is passed through the communications link or display system. These systems are designed to provide the electronic analog of writing on a piece of paper with a pencil. Components of three INTERAND commercial products, marketed under the tradenames Telestrator, Electrochek and Audiografix Electronic Graphic Communications Systems, were configured as a system to meet the given objective. A series of minor configurational changes were made that added up in total to a higher quality system more suited to Air Force applications. The complete array of hardware called for in the contract was delivered to the Air Force on 31 May 1972 and passed the acceptance test procedures. High fidelity and clear graphics were transmitted simultaneously with voice. Real-time and double speed graphic recording and playback was also demonstrated with precision of the order of one per cent. The system functioned well with small radiated powers and in relatively high noise environments. Extensions of the present system include two-way verification of messages, extreme time compression of graphic transmissions, encryption for message security, and more compact and rugged graphic display devices.
