A Generalization of Hanning.

Abstract

Side lobe suppression by hanning is equivalent to multiplication of a time series of duration T by the arch sin superscript(2)(pi t/T). The consequences of the generalization, cos superscript(J)(pi(t + alpha)/T), are explored in this report. The only practical choice of phase is alpha = -T/2. As J increases over the positive integers, the side lobes decrease in magnitude at the expense of ever increasing bandwidth for the equivalent filter. (Author)
