The Future Role of France in Morocco.
Abstract
The French presence in Morocco has lasted over fifty years and has left an indelible mark on the cultural, political, and economic systems of that North African country. After independence from France, Morocco discovered that it could not provide the fulfillment of the desires of her people without the aid of her former colonizer. France, for her part, was willing to aid her former colony in its nation-building efforts and thereby has attained a position of preeminence as the principal foreign power capable of exerting economic and political influence in Morocco. Besides helping Morocco's nation-building efforts France has been enabled to protect the interests of the French settlers in Morocco and, at the same time, to promote and nuture the spread of French culture. Since French international goals generally parallel those of the United States, the French influence in Morocco is not considered a serious threat to vital United States interests. The United States should therefore recognize French preeminence in Morocco and more closely coordinate its aid efforts with those of the French in an attempt to make a more constructive contribution to the realization of Moroccan national goals.
