DEVELOPMENT Of A 20mm Sabot Diverter for the M61A1 Gun.

Abstract

This report presents the results of a program to develop a rotary sabot diverter which pulverizes and diverts the plastic components associated with high velocity flechette ammunition. Specifically the sabot diverter is designed to be compatible with the M61 gun for use in either the F-4E aircraft or SUU-23/A gun pod installations for the forward firing mode. Two rotary sabot diverters, made of conventional alloy steel, were fabricated and tested. Approximately 250 rounds of standard M55 ammunition and 250 rounds of flechette ammunition were fired through the diverters. Maximum burst of flechette ammunition fired was 25 rounds. The first unit was used to obtain data on dispersion, firing rate, compatibility, structural integrity and diverter induced loads. The second unit was delivered to the Air Force for additional testing and evaluation. Test results obtained during the program conclusively prove the feasibility of the rotary diverter for use with high velocity flechette ammunition. The diverter was shown to be compatible with the M61 gun and had no adverse effect on accuracy, firing rate or time to reach maximum firing rate. The diverter proved to be highly efficient in pulverizing and diverting the sabot fragments without increasing the loads going into the gun mount structure. (Author)
