Active Night Covert Viewing System (ANCOVS).
Abstract
The design, fabrication and laboratory test evaluation of the ANCOVS(Active Night Covert Viewing System) is described. The ANCOVS is a steerable and stabilized image intensified optical viewer/terrain illuminator system for airborne night (low light level) target observation. The program encompassing the development of the ANCOVS comprised a Phase I effort which was an extensive design study and analysis to determine an optimal system configuration, including, also, the concurrent development of a high performance 80-mm, 2 stage, magnetically focused image intensifier tube; and a Phase 2 effort which covered the detailed design, fabrication and laboratory test and evaluation of the system. Major performance features of the ANCOVS are high resolution, wide field of view, semi-hemispherical steering and stabilized tracking (including an aided tracking function). Convenience and comfort features include human engineered control selection and placement. Safety interlock circuits provide for safe shut-down of the system in the event of malfunction, protection of the observer's night vision against abnormal scene brightness situations and protect the viewer scan optics against debris damage during take-offs and landings. Laboratory tests verified equipment realization of all major performance goals and design functions. The ANCOVS is now being readied for flight test evaluation. (Author)
