Generation of Simulated Satellite Radar Altimeter Observations.
Abstract
The report gives the formulation, coding (Fortran 4) and sample output of a program that produces simulated satellite radar altimeter observations. These simulated observations can be made for a nominal ocean geoid (statistically described) or for typical ocean features such as trenches, escarpments, etc. Each observation may have superimposed random measurment noise selected from Gaussian or Uniform distributions of chosen variance. Satellite and radar characteristics such as satellite altitude (and thus along track velocity) and radar pulse repetition rate (or data readout rate) are taken into account. Examples of simulated data are given for a moderately rough ocean geoid region, the Puerto Rico Trench and Blake Escarpment. (Author)
